If the BBC is scrapping the fee, it will need big sponsorship deals to be able to pay the Light Entertainment fees of presenters needed to compete with the other channels.

RTE's problem is that is has never been fully independent in that regard, and during the boom years its revenue from advertising exceeded the license fee revenue, which made the argument to scrap it compelling. I think the BBC scrapping the license scheme is a big mistake, despite all the complaints about bias, the fee was designed to keep it independent from the commercial influences of advertising.
The situation here is very different from the UK though as, although RTE has a public service remit, like the BBC, and receives funding through the license scheme, it also heavily relies on advertising and sponsorship for its revenue. You need a license regardless, if you have a television set, and the inspectors actually have more power of entry than the Guards as they're mandated by Customs & Excise, so they can demand entry to a premises.
